Back In Show Mode!

19 Feb

Has it been almost two years since I’ve updated this website? Um. Yes. I think we all know why. But the good news is, theatres are opening back up and I can not WAIT to do shows with Girls Nite Out again!

In the two years since updating this site I’ve completely forgotten how to link the shows in my calendar thingie on the side, so here’s the info below.

Saturday Feb 26th we are at The River Run Centre in Guelph:

And for International Women’s Day, we’re back at Theatre Collingwood for TWO SHOWS! Friday March 6th and Saturday March 7th. Both shows are sold out I believe, which is incredible. Last time we performed in Collingwood, we had what I’ll confidently say is one of the most incredible audience participation moments from a 96-year old woman who had LIVED A GOD DAMN LIFE!

Really hope she comes back!

If you haven’t been out to see live music, theatre, comedy or the arts – please treat yourself and support the performers. To say our industry got decimated is an understatement. Remember how much you relied on entertainment from your home during the pandemic – now we need you!

2020 Writer’s Guild of Canada nomination!

4 Mar

Well holy hell this is grand news! Being nominated for a WGC Award is tickling me all kinds of pink cause it’s the peers, ya know? And to be nominated with two JANN’s and two Schitt’s Creek’s? That’s just the best.

Fun fact, the script I’m nominated for is called ‘Tag, You’re I.T.’ which features an animated cameo of my dog, Hunter in the opening scene…

AND… Hunter was also in the Season 2 finale of Schitt’s Creek! (And yeah, that’s me doing terrible background acting.)

So frankly, I think Hunter needs a cameo on JANN to round out the nomination good luck. He’s ready and willing to work:

We won 2 Davey Awards!

WE BROUGHT HOME THE GOLD!

Double Barrel Wins Two Davey Awards for Hamilton/Burlington SPCA Campaign Video, written by myself and Jennifer Goodhue.

The spot stars Jennifer Goodhue, a bunch of adorable rescue cats and my dog, Hunter.

From the Double Barrel press release:

***************

It’s a tail as old as time: a great idea deserved a good home and after a few laughs, an award-winning match was made.

What started as an idea for a comedy sketch (“How about we show people speed dating, but with cats?”) became an online hit (10,000 views on launch day) and won two Davey Awards, in part because funny got paired with the right client and cause.

Let me back up and re-introduce you to some funny ladies I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Diana Frances (The Hour, The Debaters) and Jennifer Goodhue (Baroness Von Sketch Show, This Hour has 22 Minutes, Comedy Inc.) of F & Good Comedy have been strategic comedy partners of Double Barrel for almost three years. While collaborating on original comedy content, we’ve lightened up some pretty heavy issues and had a great time doing it. But none have brought home so many awards.

When we approached the Hamilton Burlington SPCA with the idea, not only were they excited about our vision, but it was a perfect fit to promote their Meet Your Match pet program. Starring animals Spike, Knuckles, Magoo, Sephora and Odin, in SPCA: Cat Speed Dating we had some laughs at the very real awkwardness of speed dating, while educating on HBSPCA’s valuable pet matchmaking process.

We are so proud of this piece and are excited that the Davey Awards have recognized Double Barrel and SPCA: Cat Speed Dating with a gold award in the category of Online Film/Video and a silver in Online Film/Video – Comedy. It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate this award with the team at the HBSCPA and to use our funny business to support the great work they do in our community.

Inside the Ladies Writing Room – Toronto Sketchfest

5 Mar

What a panel! Moderated by Michelle Daly (Senior Director, Comedy Content CBC) we talked our faces off about what it’s like being a lady writer in comedy. BUT – everyone had great advice for the entire audience about how to pitch, get your material in front of the right executives, conduct yourself in a writer’s room, etc.

Plus I am now going to get so much free coffee from brain-pickers!

The Smartass-ociates with Steve Patterson

What a crazy bunch o’ fun working on this show was. We shot four episodes in March of 2016, then CBC Comedy got involved and we shot another two in November.

Watch all six episodes HERE on the CBC Comedy website.

Things I learned on The Smartass-ociates:

  • Ottawa has very politically savvy audiences. Weird.
  • Olympic Speed-skater Ivanie Blondin is really good at curling my hair
  • I will never be able to afford a home in Vancouver. Or Toronto. Maybe Sudbury
  • It’s hard to improvise a pitch to David Chilton in the ‘Lizard’s Pit’
  • Pouring maple syrup and chocolate sauce on DeAnne Smith is tasty fun
  • It’s pronounced ‘sen-shee-ant’ pipeline, not ‘sen-tee-ant’ pipeline
  • Never golf with Dave Hemstead
  • Jon Steinberg cares a lot about birds
  • VIA Rail trains make an excellent writer’s room
  • People get really excited about free mugs
  • If you get drunk on scotch and pickle juice after the first big day of taping, your nickname will forever be Pickle Juice. PJ for short.

The CFC Primetime TV Writing Program — I Got In!

27 Sep

So very excited to be one of six residents for the 2015/16 Bell Media Primetime TV Writing Program at the Canadian Film Centre.

Our showrunner will be the lovely Avrum Jacobson (Endgame, The Listener, ReGenesis) and I couldn’t be more thrilled!
