2020 Canadian Screen Award WINNER!

28 May

Well, hot damn if it isn’t my first Canadian Screen Award for Best Writing for Corner Gas Animated! Such a thrill to win. Such a bizarre thing to win while in my basement office drinking wine alone.

Many thanks to the entire Corner Gas Animated team. It was truly one of the best writing jobs I’ve ever had, and I’m not just saying that because it came with free breakfasts.

I remember vividly last year, being backstage of the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards as one of the writers of the show, thinking how funny it would be to win *next year* and purposely make my speech super short because I know how the producers are always worried about the show going too long. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that the following year, I would be nominated and win, but the entire show would get cancelled because of a world-wide pandemic which would result in me animating my dog to give my acceptance speech. (If you wanna see that acceptance speech, check out my twitter @dianafrancesvan because the video wouldn’t upload here for some dumb reason.)

Brent Butt also won for Best Performance and the show won for Best Animated Show. Feels like this show will have a long life on air and I wish everyone involved the best.

2020 Canadian Screen Award nominations!

17 Feb

What the who? How exciting is this!

Nominated for my writing on Corner Gas: Animated AND the 2019 Canadian Screen Awards. Plus, both shows got their own nominations.

Congrats to everyone involved. There are always so many great minds on a single script. There’s no way I can take all the credit, but I will for sure buy a fancy dress and represent for both shows!

Canadian Screen Awards 2018

12 Mar

Had a great time writing with these maniacs on the Canadian Screen Awards. Those maniacs being Steve Dylan, Graham Chittenden, Fraser Young and of course hosts Emma Hunter and Jonny Harris – who I stupidly didn’t get photos of.

But I did go total fan-girl and get a picture with Kim Coates – cause c’mon. Tig!!

Toronto ACTRA Awards 2018

25 Feb

One of the easiest gigs a gal can get is writing the opening monologue of the 2018 Toronto ACTRA Awards for one of Canada’s funniest and best improvisers, Colin Mochrie. He makes everything hilarious.

And when his adorable actor/comedian wife Deb McGrath joins him on stage? Just sit back and listen to the laughs roll in.

JFL Galas

Every once in a while, life gives you what I call a ‘Pony Day.’

Here me out. So… if you subscribe to the whole ‘life is a gift’ theory – then every day is like unwrapping a present, right? Most of the time, that day unwraps and is kinda boring. Like you’re getting socks. Cool cool, we all need socks. But THEN… some days, a phone call or email will make the day unwrap itself with a huge surprise. Like you just got given a pony.

I was in the Calgary airport leaving the Banff World Media Festival, where I’d written the Rockie Awards Gala monologue for Anthony Anderson (Blackish). JFL producer Bruce Hills was in the audience – he loved the monologue – and hired me to write for the JFL Galas. THAT was a ‘Pony Day.’

Along with Dean Jenkinson, I got to write the Gala scripts for Laverne Cox and Jane Krakowski. It was my first time at JFL. Hopefully not my last.

Banff World Media Festival – Rockie Awards

Wrote the opening monologue for Anthony Anderson (“Blackish”), which he absolutely nailed.

Then he brought me on stage to give me kudos for writing it.

Who does that? This guys does.

(As you can tell by my goofy facial expression, I was NOT expecting that.)
