Toronto ACTRA Awards 2018

25 Feb

One of the easiest gigs a gal can get is writing the opening monologue of the 2018 Toronto ACTRA Awards for one of Canada’s funniest and best improvisers, Colin Mochrie. He makes everything hilarious.

And when his adorable actor/comedian wife Deb McGrath joins him on stage? Just sit back and listen to the laughs roll in.

Improv in Ireland – Grand Stretch

You know what makes the Irish laugh? Everything. Even before the show starts.

Got to perform the inaugural TheatreSports Ireland show thanks to this hard working fella,  Darren Yorke of Grand Stretch Improv.

Got too drunk/excited to take a cast photo, but Darren joined me, Denise Jones, Michael Teigen, Dan Dumsha, Duane Keogh, and special guest Dave Keogh on guitar. Here are some of us, already drinking before the show started.

JFL Galas

30 Jun

Every once in a while, life gives you what I call a ‘Pony Day.’

IMG_5924

Here me out. So… if you subscribe to the whole ‘life is a gift’ theory – then every day is like unwrapping a present, right? Most of the time, that day unwraps and is kinda boring. Like you’re getting socks. Cool cool, we all need socks. But THEN… some days, a phone call or email will make the day unwrap itself with a huge surprise. Like you just got given a pony.

I was in the Calgary airport leaving the Banff World Media Festival, where I’d written the Rockie Awards Gala monologue for Anthony Anderson (Blackish). JFL producer Bruce Hills was in the audience – he loved the monologue – and hired me to write for the JFL Galas. THAT was a ‘Pony Day.’

Along with Dean Jenkinson, I got to write the Gala scripts for Laverne Cox and Jane Krakowski. It was my first time at JFL. Hopefully not my last.

Girl’s Night Out – Barrie ON

14 Apr

Screen Shot 2017-05-05 at 1.46.03 AMIs there anything more fun that four wickedly hilarious women performing for a group of wickedly appreciative women? Yes. When there’s a guy on piano.

Thanks Jennine Proffeta, Karen Parker, Kevin J. Baker and our hilarious host Laurie Elliot.

I will never forget ‘Over-Sharon’ who pulled her entire skirt over her head while gyrating suggestively towards me.

Sex & The Suburbs – Maple Ridge Arts Centre

21 Jan

086cleavagesOh my home town of Maple Ridge got a face full of funny shit last night.

Things I learned from our Sex & The Suburbs Show on Saturday January 21st, 2017

  • A fog machine aimed straight up Denise’s skirt is far funnier than anything we were trying to do in our sexy Beyonce entrance.
  • Jamie makes a damn fine replacement for the now retired Ellie Harvie
  • The sushi place around the corner WILL make you late for your call
  • Every woman who told stories in the ‘Improvised Talk Show’ have crazy weird lives.
  • That Improvised Talk Show format REALLY works

The Smartass-ociates with Steve Patterson

Screen Shot 2017-05-05 at 1.24.24 AM.png

What a crazy bunch o’ fun working on this show was. We shot four episodes in March of 2016, then CBC Comedy got involved and we shot another two in November.

Watch all six episodes HERE on the CBC Comedy website.

Things I learned on The Smartass-ociates:

  • Ottawa has very politically savvy audiences. Weird.
  • Olympic Speed-skater Ivanie Blondin is really good at curling my hair
  • I will never be able to afford a home in Vancouver. Or Toronto. Maybe Sudbury
  • It’s hard to improvise a pitch to David Chilton in the ‘Lizard’s Pit’
  • Pouring maple syrup and chocolate sauce on DeAnne Smith is tasty fun
  • It’s pronounced ‘sen-shee-ant’ pipeline, not ‘sen-tee-ant’ pipeline
  • Never golf with Dave Hemstead
  • Jon Steinberg cares a lot about birds
  • VIA Rail trains make an excellent writer’s room
  • People get really excited about free mugs
  • If you get drunk on scotch and pickle juice after the first big day of taping, your nickname will forever be Pickle Juice. PJ for short.
